The Blessings of Sahur: A Time of Mercy and Worship

Keajaiban Dibalik Dasyatnya Makan Sahur Saat Berpuasa

Regarding the practice of sahur (pre-dawn meal) during Ramadan, it is recommended to consume it before the break of dawn. In one narration, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The difference between us and the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) is eating sahur" (Sahih Muslim).

Allah also says in the Quran:

"And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread of the night, then complete the fast until the night" (Al-Baqarah 187).

Sahur holds blessings both in this world and the hereafter. Ibn Hajar, in Fath al-Bari, explains that the blessing of sahur can be gained in many ways, including following the Sunnah of the Prophet, distinguishing ourselves from the People of the Book, and having taqwa (consciousness) of Allah. It adds enthusiasm to our worship, helps prevent bad character that may result from hunger, encourages charity, and provides an opportunity to gather with others in remembrance of Allah. It also allows for making du’a (supplications) at times when they are most likely to be accepted, and for refining one’s intention before sleeping.

Additionally, Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who perform sahur. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

"Sahur is a blessing, so do not leave it, even if it is just a sip of water, for Allah and His angels send blessings upon those who partake in sahur." (Sahih At-Tarhib, no. 1070).

The time of sahur is a special time, and those who observe it are also considered special in the sight of Allah. Allah says:

"The patient, the truthful, the devout, those who spend (in charity), and those who seek forgiveness before dawn." (Aali Imran 17)

Therefore, the blessings of sahur are not limited to just eating and drinking; it also includes acts of worship during that time, such as performing Tahajjud prayer, making supplications, and reciting the Quran. If one continues to engage in these acts throughout the month of Ramadan, it is hoped that it will become a habit and a need for the believer.

The time of sahur is a precious "golden hour," full of blessings, beauty, and joy. It is a time when one is most focused in supplicating to Allah and remembering Him. Let us maximize this precious time and make the best use of it during the blessed month of Ramadan.
