How to Pay Zakat Fitrah: Complete with Intentions

We have previously discussed various matters related to what can be given, when it should be given, and to whom zakat fitrah should be distributed, as well as the prohibition on giving it to those who are not entitled to receive zakat. Now, let's talk about how to give zakat fitrah. Should we give it directly to those who are entitled to receive it, or should we give it to the committee at the mosque, musalla, or madrasah that organizes the zakat fitrah collection?

There is no need to be confused about distributing zakat fitrah, as many institutions or committees handle this matter. Almost every mosque forms a committee every year to manage zakat fitrah. Religious organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Al-Irsyad, and others also help manage this zakat through their respective committees. However, if you prefer to distribute your zakat fitrah directly to those entitled, that is also allowed, as long as it is done fairly and safely to avoid disputes or queues that could harm the Muslim community. Before understanding the procedure, it is important to understand the definition and conditions of zakat fitrah.

The steps to pay zakat fitrah are as follows:
1. Choose the best staple food (such as rice, sago, corn, etc.) that is at least equal to what you typically eat daily.
2. Measure it according to the prescribed amount. If using a liquid measurement, make sure the standard size is followed, such as 3 liters or more. If using weight, ensure the scale is accurate, and take 2.5 kilograms of rice.
3. For those who are obliged to give zakat, make the intention: Intention for Zakat
Arabic:

نَوَيْتُ فَرْضَ زَكَاةِ الْفِطْرِ عَنْ نَفْسِي فَرْضًا لِلَّهِ تَعَالَى

Translation:
I intend to give zakat fitrah for myself, as an obligation for the sake of Allah.
4. The staple food (such as rice) should be given directly to those entitled or handed over to the committee at the mosque or other places.
5. Ensure the zakat is given on time, either according to the committee's schedule or distributed personally on the night of Eid al-Fitr or the morning before the Eid prayer.
6. The committee receiving the zakat should pray:
Prayer of the Zakat Receiver
Arabic:

اللّهُمَّ اجْعَلْهُ مَغْفِرَةً وَرَحْمَةً وَبَرَكَةً لَكَ وَيَسَّرْتَ لِي فِيهِ جَمْعَك

Translation:
May Allah reward you for what you have given, and may Allah bless what remains with you. May Allah purify both us and you.
7. The committee is responsible for distributing the zakat to those who are entitled to receive it.
