The Proper Procedure for Paying Zakat Fitrah
Previously, we discussed issues related to what can be given as zakat, when it should be given, to whom zakat fitrah should be distributed, and the prohibition of giving it to those who are not eligible. Now, let’s discuss how to distribute zakat fitrah. Should we give it directly to those entitled to receive it, or should we hand it over to a committee at a mosque, prayer hall, or Islamic school that organizes zakat fitrah collection?
There is no need to worry or be confused about distributing zakat fitrah, as many institutions or committees handle this matter. Almost every mosque forms a committee every year to manage zakat fitrah distribution.
Religious organizations also assist in managing zakat through their committees, such as Nahdlatul Ulama, Muhammadiyah, Al-Irsyad, and others. However, if we wish to distribute our zakat fitrah directly to those entitled to receive it, this is also allowed, provided that justice and security are maintained to prevent disputes or crowds that may harm the Muslim community.
Before understanding the procedure, first, learn about the Definition of Zakat Fitrah and Its Provisions.
